What are immigration exams?
- If you're planning to immigrate to the United States or apply for a Green Card, one important step in the process is completing an immigration medical exam. This exam is required before your application can move forward, as it helps determine if any health issues might affect your eligibility.
- The immigration exam is a standard medical checkup designed to identify certain health conditions that could make someone "inadmissible" to the US. That just means a person might not be allowed to enter or stay in the country based on their health.
- Only certain doctors are approved by either the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or the US Consulate handling your case to perform this exam. Rockland Family Medical Care has licensed providers who offer immigration medical exams in a welcoming, respectful, and supportive environment.
What do immigration exams screen for?
- Think of the immigration exam as a health screening to help protect public health in the US. It isn’t the same as a full physical or a regular doctor’s visit where you'd get treatment or a diagnosis. Instead, it checks for specific conditions that might prevent someone from being approved for immigration.
- Some of the medical conditions that may lead to inadmissibility include:
- Tuberculosis (active)
- Hansen’s disease
- Gonorrhea
- Cholera
- Plague
- Smallpox
- Yellow fever
- If you have questions about a particular condition, feel free to contact Rockland Family Medical Care.
What documentation do I need to bring to my immigration exam?
Having all of your paperwork in order will help ensure a smoother, easier process. You’ll need to bring some key documents with you, including:
- A valid passport, identity card, or travel document
- Your vaccination and immunization records
- Any previous chest X-rays, if available
- Copies of your medical history
What can I expect at my immigration exam appointment?
- Go over your medical and vaccination history
- Perform a physical examination
- Conduct a chest X-ray if needed
- Order blood tests as needed to screen for specific diseases
- If everything is in order, your provider will complete Form I-693. This form is a required part of your immigration paperwork and must be submitted to USCIS.
